VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis and his eight cardinal advisers on church governance spent much of their first day together discussing reform of the Synod of Bishops, but the Vatican downplayed expectations that their discussions would lead to major changes in the near future.
Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, told reporters Oct. 2 that the pope and the international Council of Cardinals had held morning and afternoon sessions the previous day, for the first of three days of initial meetings.
Their morning session took place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in a private library in the Apostolic Palace. Pope Francis opened the meeting with a talk on the ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council, in order to establish a “working climate not limited to organizational questions but broadly spiritual and ecclesiological,” Father Lombardi said.
Among the topics of the pope’s reflection were the mission of the church, the relationship between the universal church and local churches, collegiality, the church and poverty, and the role of the laity.
Each of the cardinals then offered a summary of the suggestions he had collected in preparation for the meeting, and offered his views on what should be the major areas of the council’s work.

Pope calls for less “Vatican-centric,” more socially conscious church

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — In his latest wide-ranging interview, Pope Francis said that he aimed to make the Catholic Church less “Vatican-centric” and closer to the “people of God,” as well as more socially conscious and open to modern culture.
He also revealed that he briefly considered turning down the papacy in the moments following his election last March, and identified the “most urgent problem” the church should address today as youth unemployment and the abandonment of elderly people.
The pope’s remarks appeared in a 4,500-word interview, published Oct. 1 in the Rome daily La Republica, with Eugenio Scalfari, a co-founder and former editor-in-chief of the newspaper.

Que estas reuniones nos hagan más humildes para dar un hermoso testimonio de la Iglesia

El papa Francisco presidió la misa de la mañana del martes en la Casa Santa Marta, al concelebrar con los purpurados del Consejo de Cardenales, que a partir de hoy se reunirán con el papa en el Vaticano hasta el 3 de octubre. En su homilía, el santo padre dijo: “Espero que estas reuniones nos hagan a todos más humildes y confiados en Dios, para que la Iglesia puede dar un hermoso testimonio a las personas”.

El santo padre inició su homilía recordando el evangelio del día en el que Jesús reprende a los dos apóstoles que querían hacer bajar fuego del cielo sobre aquellos que no le habían acogido y ha advertido que le camino del cristiano no es “un vía de venganza”. El camino del cristiano es el de la humildad, de la mansedumbre.

Y recordando que es la fiesta de santa Teresita del Niño Jesús, precisó: “Nos hará bien pensar en este espíritu de humildad, de ternura, de bondad”. Un espíritu humilde, añadió, que el Señor quiere de todos nosotros. ¿Dónde está pues el poder “que nos lleva a este espíritu?” se preguntó. Justamente “en el amor, en la conciencia de que estamos en las manos del Padre” dijo. “Cuando uno escucha esto”, señaló, “no es para hacer descender fuego del cielo”.

Porque “viene el otro espíritu, el de la caridad que todo lo sufre, todo lo perdona, que no es jactancioso, que es humilde, que no se busca a sí mismo. Alguno puede decir, y existieron algunos filósofos que la pensaban así, que se trata de una humillación de la majestad del hombre, de la grandeza del hombre. Esto es estéril. La Iglesia ha declarado a santa Teresita, humilde, pequeña, con confianza en Dios y llena de dulzura: Patrona de las Misiones”.
